My Story
Welcome to Tales of a Trainee Teacher
Hi, my name is Stephanie Dunn and I am currently studying to be a primary school teacher at Edge Hill University. I have chosen to study English as my major specialist subject, along with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as my minor specialism. This blog is a journey of my teacher training course.

Why did I decide to get into teaching?

I cannot remember a time when I did not want to be a primary school teacher, it has always been my dream profession from a young age - my mum and dad even have evidence of this from my childhood!
Teaching and childcare is in my family history, as my sister is a trained nursery worker, my mother was a primary school teacher and my cousin is currently a Head teacher of a primary school. They all warned me about what is involved with being a teacher, such as the long hours spent planning and marking, but nothing that anyone has ever said has ever put me off or changed my thoughts.

Primary teaching is not just a job to me. It is a profession that allows me to continue learning and developing as an individual, gives me opportunities to provide children with a positive start to their education and inspire children to work to the best of their ability to achieve in the future.

My School Days

During my own primary school days I attended an ‘Outstanding’ primary school, which was a short walk from my home. I had lots of amazing teachers, who inspired me and produced creative, engaging and motivating lessons consistently.

There are so many memories from my primary school days that it is difficult to highlight single lessons or teachers. For example: I was lucky to gain lots of first-hand experience-based lessons, such as recreating the Jewish Passover meal within the classroom for RE and going to catch mini-beasts in the school woods to observe in science. These lessons were exciting and the teachers were always enthusiastic, strengthening my determination to become a primary school teacher, so that I can provide children with quality experiences that I was fortunate to have.
Next steps

My teachers acted as role-models, contributing to my own teaching philosophies and my self-image as a trainee teacher. I aim to be a passionate teacher who is always willing to listen and creates memorable and engaging lessons, which are creative and well prepared. I want to encourage my pupils to try new things and motivate them to always try their best. I know it will not be easy, but I am willing to work hard!

Luckily, I gained a place at Edge Hill University to guide me in becoming a primary school teacher and I am looking forward to the challenging journey ahead.
