A lovely story that is both enjoyable and meaningful, as it carries the message to accept others and their differences. The book could be used to explore acceptance, being unique, equality and teamwork. This could also be extended to developing an understanding about different cultures or religions for example. Children can learn the importance of respect.
I really enjoy reading this book, especially with the beautiful illustrations. I feel that many children would easily relate to the narrative, because everyone is unique in their own way and this story shows that differences are a positive thing to embrace.
Possible link - special objects (history) children can discuss their own opinions and see how everyone is different in a positive way.
"Yipee-e-e-e! 'S' is for special"
"I'll have her just as she is"
"It has character"
