Author: Julia Donaldson

Illustrator: Axel Scheffler

Age: EYFS/KS1

This is a brilliant book with lovely illustrations for young children to enjoy, especially in the run up to Christmas. It would be helpful to use when thinking about different emotions. Children could discuss how stick man felt at different parts of the story e.g. he might be embarrassed when the dog plays fetch with him.

For a creative focus children could design their own stick man, using their choice of materials e.g. lolly sticks, pom-poms, pipe-cleaners. Children would all do this differently and can discuss being unique.

"Stick man lives in his family tree": children could begin to make their own family tree (history link).

Narrative has repetitive moments to encourage children to join in - this could be used to create a role-play
