This book would be a great resource to use in the running up to sports day. It introduces the value of taking part and enjoying yourself (not the winning that counts). It also shows how friendship is important.
PE links - read a page introducing a sport event, such as the long jump, then children could do this is in PE. This particular event also relates to measurement in mathematics and a possible science link could be an investigation to see the relationship between height of a person and the length of their jump (Will the tallest person jump the furthest?)
Children could create medals for the sports events, but also for values - teamwork, leadership, friendship, effort, personal best etc.
"This is fun!"
"Well done"
"That was my best jump ever"
