One day the doorbell rang and Lucy went to open the door. Nobody was there. She looked left, and then she looked right, but Lucy could not see anyone. She locked the door and when she turned to go into the kitchen Lucy saw something she was not expecting to see...

Sitting at her kitchen table was a mischievous monkey!

Lucy tried her hardest to get the monkey to leave but it refused. Every time Lucy turned around the monkey had disappeared and hidden itself in a new room. After an hour of chasing the monkey around the house she decided to take it back to its home.

First, Lucy asked at the local zoo, but they had not lost any mischievous monkeys. Next, she tried the nature park, but they had not lost any mischievous monkeys either. She even tried at the vets, but the receptionist said no mischievous monkeys had ever been to the vets. Lucy was exhausted after looking all day, so she went back home.

The mischievous monkey jumped on her bed, ran around the sofa and then began to climb the trees in the back garden. Finally, it fell asleep, hanging from the tallest branch.

The next morning the monkey was sitting at the end of Lucy's bed. Lucy sat and thought about what to do with it until her head began to ache.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. It was a keeper from the safari park who had heard about the monkey. They were willing to give it a home.

Lucy went to get the monkey, but it looked afraid. It did not want to live at the safari park, it wanted to live with Lucy.

Lucy told the Keeper there had been a mistake, so the keeper nodded his head, waved goodbye and left. Lucy did not want the mischievous monkey to leave and neither did the mischievous monkey, so Lucy told it that it could stay.

The monkey was so happy and began to swing from tree to tree. Lucy watched and smiled at the monkey. No longer was it just a mischievous monkey. The monkey was now Lucy's new friend for life, and they were about to set off on the most exciting adventure in the world!
