Poet: Spike Milligan

Age: KS1

Spike Milligan is a poet who wrote nonsense poems, so I think this is a great way t o introduce early poetry, along with nursery rhymes. The poem itself doesn't make sense on purpose to achieve the comedic, whimsical tone, but will introduce poetic features to young children, such as rhyme and onomatopoeia.

This poem can allow the teacher and children to be playful, creative and inventive with the English language, as you can use your imagination throughout. This would be a good poem to perform with some musical instruments and actions, or children could make their own poetry using an activity like cut up poems.

Children could make rhyming word banks e.g. clang, fang, bang, tang, sang, hang etc.
