Ask children to consider all the types of writing they have done in the last week, then consider the audience and purposes of each writing task.

Types of writing:

Birthday card

Lists

e-mails

Text messages

Social media

Reminders

Session notes

Lecture notes

Diary

Assignments

Journal entries

Audiences:

Personal

Tutors

Family/friends

Companies

Purposes:

Academic requirement

To help myself and stay organised

For knowledge

To contact others or provide a message to others

By considering the audience and purpose of our writing, this can help us understand how our writing style and tone of voice changes e.g. reflective writing in journal, informal writing in text messages, use of bullet points for lists and notes, professional and formal style for academic assignments.
